1. Web
site should be well organized.
2. Every graphic on a web page
should have a valid purpose, it should relate to the text on that page, to the
message being communicated, and to the audience.
3. Background color should be easy
on the eyes, some colors may hurt visitors eyes and they will leave quickly.
4. Colored text should contrast with
the background so that it is readable.
5. Do not center all text on a page,
paragraphs of centered text are too hard to read.
6. Keep your information direct and
to the point.
7. Keep columns of text under 5
inches in width, larger widths are difficult to read.
8. If using audio files, or movies,
give viewers a choice whether or not to use them.
9. Don't use blue for regular text
color; blue is typically used for links and may cause confusion.
10. As in 9 don't underline text for
emphasis (underlined text usually signifies a link)
11. Use animations carefully and sparingly.
12. Check accuracy of text, check
spelling and grammar.
13. If you want to give your visitors
more information, create a pdf file for them to download.
14. Always have contact information
on your site.
15. Use links to other sites that
are relevant to yours.
16. Always include a webmaster's
e-mail link at the bottom of the page or on the contact page.
17. Try your best to make sure your
site is accessible to everyone regardless of the browser they are using, however
covering IE and Firefox will cover about 80% of most visitors.
18. If you are trying to reach
a global audience make sure your graphics can be translated and understood
internationally.
19. Check out your site on different
computers, colors change from Mac to PC.
20. Use other sites as a way to
expand on current ideas or get new ideas.
